Itinerary – 2-Day Lago Yacumama Tour
Day 1 – Arrival, Jungle Walk & Tambopata River Sunset
Upon arrival in Puerto Maldonado, you will be met by our staff for a private land transfer followed by a scenic boat ride along the Tambopata River to reach La Habana Amazon Reserve. Upon arrival at the lodge, guests are welcomed with a fresh seasonal fruit juice. After check-in, enjoy a brief rest and orientation.
In the afternoon, you will join your guide on a jungle walk along interpretive trails near the lodge. This walk introduces you to the ecological dynamics of the Amazon rainforest, including its towering trees, medicinal plants, insects, and, with luck, sightings of monkeys, toucans, or agoutis.
In the late afternoon, we board a wooden canoe for a boat ride along the Tambopata River during golden hour. This is an ideal time for wildlife observation, with chances to see herons, cormorants, and capybaras. As night falls, we use flashlights to scan the riverbanks for nocturnal caimans, often seen resting along the edges. After this activity, return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay in a private cabin.
Day 2 – Lake Yacumama Wildlife Canoe Tour & Return
We begin the day early, departing at 4:00 a.m. by boat to a nearby trail leading to Lake Yacumama, a remote and peaceful oxbow lake surrounded by flooded forest. After a short jungle walk, we board a small paddle canoe to explore the lake’s still waters at dawn.
This early morning hour offers the best conditions for birdwatching. Species often observed include hoatzins, herons, parrots, toucans, hawks, and occasionally monkeys moving in the treetops. During this excursion, we also practice traditional piranha fishing with basic gear and local techniques—an enjoyable and interactive experience.
We return to the lodge around 8:00 a.m. for a full breakfast. Guests have time to rest, shower, and pack. At approximately 10:30 a.m., the return journey to Puerto Maldonado begins, including the boat ride and land transfer. Drop-off is available at the airport, bus terminal, or hotel.
